Getting a bit Pollock

Apr 15 2012 Published by under Art, My Creations, Painting

It’s been a groovy sort of a weekend, done lots of fun stuff.

One rather unexpected event was in the outside painting that we did yesterday. I actually put some paint to canvas myself. It’s the first time in over 3 years that I have done a painting.

I guess it’s a bit daft, a bit has been done, alot, and a lot better. I called this post ‘Getting a bit Pollock’ but I guess that’s actually quite an insult to Mr Pollock.

Typing this worthless ramble does remind me that I need to update some of the images I lost when I transferred the hosting though.

Anyway, here it is. If you want it, let me know!

Painting Outside

Apr 14 2012 Published by under ideas for dad

Hope you are having a lovely saturday. We have just had a magical afternoon, one of those

Outside painting - Toddler painting herself

The bear painting her shoulder

truly special moments. We have been painting in the garden :-) Just monstrous fun!

I’d been intending on holding fire with this until the weather’s a little warmer, but the sun was mostly out and while not the warmest day, it wasn’t too windy.

It took a bit of setting up, to make sure I was ready before the bear unleashed hell. I split one of the boxes from our recent house move and then propped it up against the bushes, using bricks to stop it blowing down.

I grabbed some of the huge brown paper we have from a scrap centre, and I also took an A3 sheet of white paper and masking taped TILLY on it in big letters. I then found some trays and poured some of our old and new paints.

Rather sensibly I set up a washing up bowl and some towels too… but that’s not too exciting.

It was after 10-15 minutes of flowering about with this that I unleashed a bear clad on in a nappy and the two of us had an absolute blast! The most amount of fun I have had in a long old time. Standing in paint and then dancing on the paper, flicking it with my hands, smudging it everywhere.

I know this is meant to be an activity for the bear, but man I loved it! She really did too, she giggled and shrieked and slathered paint all over herself, me, the bushes, the grass, anything she was allowed anywhere near.

Our outside painting masterpiece

We used cotton wool, paint brushes, hands, feet, arms, legs, feathers, cotton wool, sticks and leaves to paint our canvasses.

Not quite sure how long we were out there for, must have been over an hour, the paint was topped up alot as we got through a fair bit. The washing up bowl also became a bit of a bear bath, and so as she painted herself we got one of our big rhino tubs and filled it with bubbly water, which became a game in its own right.

I’m sure there are some of you baulking at the thought of doing this, but if you are brave, willing or able I recommend it, while the angel couldn’t participate even she enjoyed herself just watching.

So without going anywhere we all got some fresh air, Tilly and I got some exercise as we pranced and danced and crawled about, we got to be creative, experiment, blow off some steam, make a mess without trashing the house (although the grass could do with some rain), have some great quality/bonding time and giggle alot.

Once we were done we hit the bath and are now all chilling out in comfy clothes, clean, warm and everyone looking really quite content. Just marvellous.

Curry next. Yeeha!

Peace

Art – Walk, a City Painting

Sep 11 2011 Published by under Art, My Creations, Painting

A really simple painting (but then I suppose all of mine are). I love this and I vividly remember painting it. It wasn’t planned, it just all fell together. I remember sitting panicked and trying not to rush as I felt I was on to something.  I really think I was.

This painting however, is full of regret. I sold it and very cheaply, I wish I had held on to it.

Art – Identity

Identity

“Identity” is definitely a painting that people find dark. I remember painting it whilst listening to ‘Live at the Gyspy Tea Rooms’ By Joseph Arthur (a great live recording, well worth a listen). I think I was actually in quite good spirits that day, but this is certainly brooding if not sinister.

Painting – Painting Overload

Aug 06 2011 Published by under ideas for dad

Been a crazy Friday today, started work at 7:30 and worked straight through to 3 in a crazy and stressful fashion, then a driving lesson before heading home. Once home it was straight to the park on Tilly’s trike for lots of fun and playing with a little girl we met, while I spoke to her Grandma. Then an early dinner as Helen was working.

After dins we did some painting. I say some painting, but really it was LOTS of painting – 18 pictures! 18! She is one prolific little artist! To prevent slightly ‘dry’ thank you letters, we thought some pictures painted by Tilly would be a lovely way of thanking all of her aunties, uncles and cousins for her fab birthday present. 12 were just painting fun frenzy – I think each cousin may get some pictures too!

It’s definitely an idea worth considering next time your little ones have thank you letters to write, as had so much fun doing this.

We were both absolutely covered in paint, there were lots hand prints happening (and Tilly singing smooth road as she spread an inordinate amount of paint on one piece of paper), so we hit the bath. The water was so dirty from all the paint we had to run a second bath for general bathtime fun!

Tilly’s imaginative play is really kicking in and she really got into ‘what animals can we see at the zoo’, doctor and supermarket and it’s really great fun to play with her.  She was clearly pooped so we sung some songs and read some books and she was pretty much straight to sleep.

Given I only spent 2.5hours with her, we managed to have alot of fun, a great way to start a weekend. Didn’t feel like the start of the weekend mind, as after she was in bed I had to; tidy kitchen, do dishwasher, put washing on the line, tidy paint madness and do over 2 hours more work…

I did get a chance for some ukulele fun though (I’m not sure they liked my cover of you’re the one that I want – a window slammed shut during the chorus). I also spent ages finally cutting out pictures and scrap paper ready for a sticking frenzy this morning. Tidge has forgotten I promised to do sticking, but I don’t think it will be long.

Messy Play – Something a bit different

Aug 04 2011 Published by under ideas for dad

We were doing painting this morning and tidge was really keen to do sticking. I was less so as we had lots of paint out and I still haven’t cut up more shapes.
I grabbed one of the cheap old magazines and found a couple large pictures we could stick, one of earth (pictured here) and one of some grazing elephants.
We stuck the pictures down on some paper and then I suggested we paint on to the picture. Tilly thought this was a very novel suggestion and was keen that a lolly stick went on too :-)

It’s definitely an idea for messy play worth considering. Something a bit different with minimal parental effort!

Messy Play – Saturday – Hooray!!!!

Jul 23 2011 Published by under ideas for dad

It’s only blooming-well Saturday isn’t it?! Hooray!!!

So, my crabby little bear and I are now sat having some strawberries, a cuddle and watching gigglebiz. Think morning fun has caught up with her a bit.

This morning we did stamping, she got some fab little stamper sets at Christmas and they are now coming into their own, easy to hold brushes and stamps such as spots, lines, cats, ducks etc…

We bought some little trays for poster paints, but I think an ice cream tub lid or some such would do just as well. I’ve relaxed a bit about which paints to pour so we had trays with red, green, blue and yellow :-) only supervision was switching which paints she had (she only has one tray in reach at a time else it would get a bit mental).

Lots of fun, and more experimenting with hand and finger painting/printing – all by her own design of course.

A great start to her birthday weekend. And the best thing is, I popped her at the sink to play bubbles and she cleaned all the brushes for me!

have a great weekend x

Messy Play – Pockets of Bliss

Jul 17 2011 Published by under ideas for dad

Hi everyone, it’s a cloudy rainy Sunday morning and I have been having a blast with my beautiful furball, a welcome distraction from my over active and unhelpful mind. Think the last few weeks/months of craziness is catching up with my noggin now. Tired and as mentioned over active. But anyway, that’s another issue entirely, we are here to talk about fun :-)

7:30 and the war cry was issued ‘DADDY PAINTINGING’ (sic), so gigglebiz went off, the Beatles went on, I grabbed my cuppa and we set to work. Messy play is just great;

  • she gets to paint pictures – today abstract views of mummy, t for Tilly, t for Daddy (apparently), mummy’s car and bubba-
  • she also gets to request pictures from me – which today were letters and numbers-
  • And then there is the experimenting of mixing colours and using fingers, painting daddy etc…..

I don’t offer messy play as a learning exercise, I offer it for fun and creativity, but I love that she can learn too, I think that’s the best way to do it and I can see how her imagination is growing everyday. Bubba got a ringside seat and managed to stay clean and dry (although no longer, she is currently sat in a sink full of water).

I also love how she gets to explore her cheeky little nature – I was painted again today but then so was her nose and her legs, her legs were painted in a blue that can only be reminiscent of bruising…..

After a little while of painting the ‘STICKINING(sic)’ cry was issued and that’s where the fun really began. We both covered paper in glue, then we threw coloured paper, tissue paper and magazine pictures I had previously cut out at the paper and then splatted it to make sure it was stick.

She had an absolute hoot and 5 pictures were created in no time at all.  Bubba even very luckily got to splat some pictures too – lucky bubba.

And so we end as we did last week, straight to bubbles in the kitchen sink where the messy play and experimenting continues, bubba gets a bath, so does the rest of the kitchen and we won’t tell mummy why there is no washing up liquid left..

Have a great Sunday xx

Messy Play – Hey! Messy Play Morning

Jul 10 2011 Published by under ideas for dad

Hey all,

Been a few weeks now since there has been any daddy daughter messy play fun, what with going away and then that life thing getting away. We’ve had a busy few weeks and have really only had the chance to do odd bits of drawing together and nothing of particular note.

The mummy and I have also been having some later nights at the weekend, which hasn’t really made painting, sticking and crafting high on the agenda. In fairness, this morning was one of those days, the bear -who is now in a big girl bed- has been getting up alot earlier than recently and so I was trying to doze on the sofa while she watched cbeebies. (The whole thing is a false economy as I get no more rest but make myself more tired and irritable, but that’s another matter).

So I spent an hour on the sofa trying desperately to pretend I was still in bed, while Tilly had some cereal and watched postman pat. I opened my eyes to find her right in front of me ‘DADDY PAINTING’ was the war cry, it was quickly repeated until I moved – which is fair enough, I did not look like a man about to move. But after a couple of false starts painting is what we did.

Had an absolute blast for 45 minutes, using block paints for painting, then drawing and doing lots of gluing. also used some fab little adhesive foam vehicle shapes that we bought cheaply at tesco. Had almost forgotten how much fun it is to do, and how I love watching her experiment.

Experimenting today meant finally succeeding in painting my nose, cheeky little rascal looked very pleased with herself!

Anyways, lots of jolly good fun had by all and a couple more crazy creations, will hopefully post some updated pics soon, have a fab sunday whatever you are doing, its the local soapbox derby as part of Newport Pagnells Carnival, can’t wait, I’ve never seen it before. Also got a driving lesson, less exciting, but necessary I guess.
