Tilly recently moved into her big girl bed, so bed times have become even more about stories – we’d always read stories before bed, but I used to sing after them. Now it’s stories in bed and time to sleep.
It’s a bit sad for me, as I used to enjoy singing to her each night, but then it’s probably just as well as she was started to demand which songs she wanted and they were all kids songs. Dont get me wrong I happily sing kids songs with her, but I quite enjoyed singing an array of different stuff to her at bed time.
Last night was the first time in a long time I was able to cuddle her in the rocking chair and sing, after Old Macdonald, baa baa black sheep and twinkle star I snuck in ‘I aint scared of lightning’ by Tom Mcrae
It worries me how someone who isn’t even two can have watched so much on youtube. Most watched has to be Peppa Pig, closely followed by a great variety of versions of wheels on the bus.
Tilly is a big fan of incy wincy spider, and it’s one of the first songs she knows all the words to.
The incey wincey spider
Climbed up the spout
Down came the rain
And washed the spider out
Out came the sun
And dried up all the rain
And the incey wincey spider
Climbed up again
I think I’ll also use this site to tell you about other songs Tilly likes, or that I sing to her.
Most days since she was born I have sung Starlings By Elbow to her. It started in hospital, I was listening to the seldom seen kid on headphones while Helen slept and started singing (as I am apt to do) to the tiny little red bundle in my arms. It stuck.
A well placed singing of this song can stop her crying, get her to sleep or just calm a fractious moment. It also has an amazing affect on me and when Elbow performed it at the O2 Arena in March this year I was frankly overwhelmed. My favourite band and my emotions for my favourite little person colliding in a spectacular fashion.
How dare the Premier ignore my invitations?
He’ll have to go
So, too, the bunch he luncheons with
It’s second on my list of things to do
At the top is stopping by
Your place of work and acting like
I haven’t dreamed of you and I
And marriage in an orange grove
You are the only thing in any room you’re ever in
I’m stubborn, selfish and too old
I sat you down and told you how
the truest love that’s ever found
Is for oneself
You pulled apart my theory
With a weary and disinterested sigh
So yes I guess I’m asking you
To back a horse that’s good for glue
And nothing else
But find a man that’s truer than,
Find a man that needs you more than I
Sit with me a while
And let me listen to you talk about
your dreams and your obsessions
I’ll be quiet and confessional
The violets explode inside me
when I meet your eyes
Then I’m spinning and I’m diving
Like a cloud of starlings
Today we went to the park
With isabelle and ella
they bought their shiny bikes
and uncle richard too
richard is their daddy
and tillys daddies brother
daddy has another
his name his uncle mark
and he does smelly parps!!
This song, was also prompted by the same ABC book as Nigel the Snail. I’d say it’s also this song that made me realise I need to remember them!

It all got a bit much and so the angry furry one takes a break with wheels on the bus on YouTube. Again daddy didnt do it quick enough and there were tears I think she is just as sleepy as her daddy
